10th Annual Home Building & Wood Products Forum - ESG Edition

January 16, 2020 - Toronto, Ontario

Emerging ESG investment themes - Operating with certified forest resources and producing products with a much lower carbon footprint than alternatives (including green energy), sustainability is a common element underpinning the North American forest products industry. Facts ESG rating agencies and investors are only beginning to appreciate. We expect increasing fund flows and resulting valuation benefits as these positive attributes are better communicated and understood. Favourable fundamentals - In response to a dwindling timber supply and low commodity prices, material amounts of North American lumber & OSB panel capacity has curtailed over the past 12 months. At the same time, after a disappointing 1H19, US housing activity levels have picked up. While the prices of building materials have rallied off of cycle lows, commodities (e.g., lumber) remain below cash costs, a situation we see as untenable - setting up for intriguing trading opportunities.
